Xbox One X opens a window onto several visual enhancements that work with either the latest 4K UHD (ultra-high-definition) TVs or super-scale down to existing HD TVs. As you shop for Xbox games, you’ll see these terms in various combination, depending on the game: 4K UHD, HDR, and Xbox One X Enhanced. Here’s a breakdown on each.
4K Ultra HD
4K UHD refers to image resolution, or the number of pixels used for each image. Games described as being 4K or 2160p offer a resolution of 3840 pixels × 2160 pixels, offering roughly four times the pixels of a 1080p HD TV and six times more pixels than 720p. To view 4K games at their native resolution, your TV must be 4K-capable, but the Xbox One X will also super-scale the 4K image down to HD TVs.
HDR (high dynamic range)
Visual dynamic range refers to the difference between the darkest and brightest information a game can show. Games that support HDR will have more detail in the darker darks and brighter brights, offering a far more natural image, depending on the screen you view them on. HDR on Xbox One consoles also uses a 10-bit color range, or a wide color gamut, and more colors, which makes for a richer, higher detailed image.
Enable HDR on your Xbox One X or Xbox One S to get the visual benefit of games and apps that support it. To see HDR visuals from games that have them, your TV must be HDR-certified and support the HDR10 standard. This means it must have a display range that skews toward either extra brightness (peak brightness over 1000 cd/m2 and black level below 0.05 cd/m2, for a contrast ratio of at least 20,000:1) or extra darkness (peak brightness over 540 cd/m2 and black level less than 0.0005 cd/m2, for a contrast ratio of at least 1,080,000:1).
Xbox One X Enhanced
Games with the Xbox One X Enhanced feature icon will have specific improvements to the game compared to a regular Xbox One or Xbox One S. Developers use the power of Xbox One X however they think best for each individual game. Enhancements could include:
- Graphic enhancements
- Increased detail in textures, assets, and additional visual effects
- Higher or more stable framerate
- Higher resolution (up to 4K, depending on your TV)
